4 Important Aspects of Copper and Brass Handicraft

To produce copper and brass handicraft with high quality is not easy. In addition to requiring special skill, craftsmanship detailed product also requires creativity, patience and diligence. Product copper and brass handicraft quality is determined by a number of important aspects of the following:

RAW MATERIALS – Raw materials such as copper and brass should be of good quality, in example; pure copper and brass. Both these metals are known to have the privilege because of its strong durability that can last for decades. Additionally, copper and brass are also anti-corrosion (rust).

SCULPTING AND ENGRAVING – Because of the metal, copper and brass has a high level of hardness. To get the sculpting and engraving quality will require a special skill and it takes patience. That’s why it will requires high level and standardized craftsmen. To finalize the skill, they are required to follow a number of training.

STAINING and/or COLORING – colors used on copper and brass are: light brown and dark, plain black, green and color combinations. To produce unique color, the copper and brass should undergo oxidation process first, by using certain chemical substances with the right dose. However, this process is guaranteed safe because of the color produced is the case of a natural process that is not harmful to health.

COATING FINISHING – At this stage copper and brass handicrafts given clear coating layer. The goal is to keep the color that does not fade fast and damage. With clear coating, copper and brass color will not change even placed both indoors and outdoors. Similarly, when the weather changes, clear coating will keep the natural color of copper and brass handicrafts. In addition, the clear coating is able to maintain the beauty of the color of copper and brass handicrafts, although it is exposed to water or detergent.

If the above four aspects are well implemented, undoubtedly crafts copper and brass handicrafts produced will have a quality that can be relied upon.

Production Stages of Copper Handicraft

Crafts copper Solaris Bali is one of the craft with a system hammered pattern that exists only in Indonesia. The system used in the manufacture of craft is also very unique. First, the raw material in form plate sheet of copper/brass, made mall pattern. For this stage craftsmen usually already implementing measure details. For the next stage, the material is already in the mall pattern form, then burned to red. The purpose of burning the copper plate to flex material that can be hammered / hammered.

After the above process, the material that has cooled then entered the stage of welding. At this stage the material that has been in the pattern will be welded in accordance with the size of the design of the desired shape. The next process is the stage of making a hammered pattern corresponding to the shape of the product, such as vases, bowl, basin, bath tube, etc.

on stage with a hammer forged, there are two techniques, namely “buko” (forged widened) and “ngimpes” (forged into). The tool used is a hammer and iron railroads as the pad. This phase is done to obtain the desired shape models. Once this stage is completed, the next process is the forge of pattern hammered or give texture pattern as desired. There are several pattern texture that is “babaran” (honeycomb pattern), chopped (spikes fall), wild, orange texture and much more.

After the process of making the texture, then the next stage is the stage of finishing shape, namely sandpapering and polishing. This is the most crucial process in which the quality of goods is determined. Need high skill and patience in sandpapering and polishing, because it affects art and the quality of the goods. It using sandpaper from coarse sandpaper until the smooth one. As for the polishing, it using the green stones and petrol/kerosene to produce a shinny colors.

Then the next step is the drying process and the process of coating/plating. In the coating process, there are two options, namely matte/doff and shiny. It depends on the buyer. In this stage we use spray system with compressor, while the materials we choose are Sikkens for shinny and Petelac to the matte/doff. The mixture composition is 3 to 2 of Sikkens/Petelac and Hardener/Thinner, so it will produce a strong layer, to overcome the oxidation of the copper/brass. Thus, the goods that produced are strong against the weather, both sun and rain. So it can be placed inside and outside the room.
